From 2003 to 2010, UQAT worked with the Cree School Board (CSB) to develop and implement community teacher training. CSB representatives asked for a training program that would provide a cohort of students with regular teaching diplomas when they graduate. In January 2005, the CSB and UQAT signed a memorandum of understanding for the purpose of offering a professional training program to Cree teachers who are beneficiaries of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement. The co-management group meetings were held to understand the situation and analyze the student’s training needs. UQAT then began a process of reviewing the students’ academic records and admitting them to the undergraduate program.
The activities were provided in English (the language of training) to teachers who teach in Cree.
In January 2010, a total of 9 Cree students were graduates of the Bachelor Degree in Preschool Education and Primary Teaching.
